Staff Update — Ongoing and upcoming projects

North Topsail Beach has transitioned into fall, closer to the end of hurricane and sea turtle nesting season. In November, the environmental window for shoreline protection projects will open. Ahead of the start of these projects, the Board of Aldermen and staff would like to provide the following updates as well as cover other miscellaneous items.

Shoreline Protection

  • Federal Project: The town’s financial advisor gave a presentation at the Board of Aldermen’s October meeting, which can be found in meeting’s agenda packet. The Board plans to announce a decision on the Federal Project after a thorough review with the Town’s financial advisor and legal counsel. For those who received letters about an easement, more information will be distributed after the Board’s decision.

  • Shoreline Protection Chart: Here is the latest version of the chart, which outlines all current and planned projects moving forward for all of town.

  • Shoreline Protection Interactive Map: The town maintains an interactive map of all shoreline protection phases and their projects. Simply enter in your address, and it will identify the phase you reside in, allowing you to explore projects planned for that phase. For more help, a user guide can be found in the “About” section of the map.

Vegetation Pickup

This fall’s vegetation pickup will begin on October 19th. See the schedule and rules for pick up below.

Oct. 19th and 20th - North of Town Hall

Oct. 21st and 22nd - South of Town Hall

  • All grass clippings, mulch, leaves, straw and vines must be in paper lawn and leaf bags (available at local hardware stores).

  • Tree limbs must be no longer than 6 feet in length and no larger than 6 inches in diameter. All vegetation must be at the right-of-way for pick up.

  • No plastic bags will be picked up.

  • Debris from lot clearing (ex. to build a home) will not be picked up.

  • Furniture, electronics and appliances will not be collected.

  • Vegetative debris resulting from the hiring of a private contractor is the responsibility of the contractor - it will not be removed by Town Staff.

2020 Census

The deadline to fill out the 2020 Census has been reinstated to the end of October. As of today, only 14.9% of NTB has responded to the census. All our residents must be counted or our community won't get all the money it needs to grow and thrive.

The data from the census is used to distribute over $675 billion in federal funds for programs and services that impact our community every day. Those programs range from road improvements to small business development to free lunch for school students.

To respond to the census, go to my2020census.gov and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

COVID-19

North Carolina has moved to Phase 3, allowing the limited opening of bars, movie theaters, and amusement parks. Social distancing and mask mandates remain in effect, so please continue to limit contact with those outside your household and always wear a mask in public spaces. For more local guidance, please go to ntbnc.org/coronavirus.

Miscellaneous

  • The 2020 election is less than a month away. Please note the following important deadlines: Register to vote in North Carolina by today, October 9th; Request your absentee ballot by Tuesday, October 27th; One-stop early voting, where you can register and vote on the same day, begins October 15th and runs through October 31st.

  • This spring, the town published a welcome guide for visitors, covering health safety, beach ordinances, and more. Please share the link online or print it out for your visitors.
