Response to North Topsail Beach, NC: A Model for Maximizing Coastal Hazard Vulnerability
The following report is a response to a paper titled "North Topsail Beach, North Carolina: A model for maximizing coastal hazard vulnerability" by Orrin H. Pilkey & William J. Neal. The Geological Society of America distributed this paper (Special Paper 400) in 2009. This paper has been cited by many and suggests that North Topsail Beach is the most vulnerable barrier-island community in the state and is the most hazardous community on the U.S. East Coast. The author of the response report, Dr. William J. Cleary, says that much of the information in the paper are the authors' opinion and not based on original data. Dr. Cleary has performed an analysis on the paper's assertions. His analysis indicates that North Topsail Beach and Topsail Island are not any more vulnerable than other coastal communities on the East Coast.
